Family Resources: Standards-Based Instruction & Grading

Family Resources: Standards-Based Instruction & Grading

All Highline schools are implementing a new instructional approach we are using across Highline: Standards-Based Instruction and Grading (SBI/G).

Standards-based instruction and grading measures your student's progress toward the learning goals for their grade, as determined by the state of Washington.

Traditional grading gives students points for individual assignments or effort, but SBI/G shows a student's progress toward learning standards.

Students have multiple ways and opportunities to demonstrate their learning in a content area. It may take students more than one attempt to meet a standard, and that is OK.

Our grading web section has more information about SBI/G. We encourage you to review this information online to learn more. This web section includes information about:

  • Commonly used SBI/G words
  • A rubric, the tool teachers use to monitor student progress
  • Assignment types
  • Benefits of SBI/G
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Resources for supporting students
  • Report card information
