Standards-Based Grading Vocabulary

Standards-Based Grading Vocabulary

This year, schools in Highline are implementing a new instructional approach called Standards-Based Grading (SBG). SBG measures your student's progress toward the learning goals for their grade.

You will begin hearing three words a lot more as we implement SBG:

  • Standards: The academic skills your child needs to know and be able to do for their grade level by the end of the school year.
  • Essential Standards: The most important standards that your child must know for their grade level.
  • Rubric: The tool teachers use to score student work on grade-level standards.

Your child will demonstrate their learning through assignments, activities and assessments (tests). You will see three types of assessments in the ParentVUE gradebook:

  • Formative Assessments measure understanding during learning
    • Examples: A short activity students do at the end of a lesson to show what they've learned.
  • Summative Assessments measure understanding after learning
    • Examples: Unit tests, projects, papers, presentations.
  • Reassessments measure understanding after additional learning
    • Examples: Repeated or revised unit tests, projects, papers, or presentations.

Our SBG web section has more information about this instructional approach. We encourage you to review this information to learn more.
