When something happens at school—big or small—students need to know what to do. Families do too.
Starting April 14, we will implement a new emergency response plan called the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to enhance safety, security and communication during emergencies. The new plan uses easy-to-understand language and simple steps to follow, depending on the situation.
This system has five actions:
- Hold – Stay in the classroom and clear the halls.
- Secure – Get inside, lock outside doors.
- Lockdown – Locks, lights, out of sight.
- Evacuate – Leave the building and go to an announced location.
- Shelter – Take cover based on the hazard (like an earthquake or tornado).
We no longer use the term “Modified Lockdown,” which was easily confused with a full lockdown. In the new protocol, we use either Hold or Secure, depending on the situation.
